Reader Review - June 2004

Robin Carlsen's book, GIVE THE GAME BACK TO THE KIDS, rings a strong chord of approval in me.  After a lifetime in baseball as a player, college coach, teacher, and yes, as the CO-commissioner of a Minnesota Little League in which my two sons played, I have a strong conviction that parents, coaches of youth leagues, friends and family of our boys and girls, need to read and heed what Coach Carlsen has written.  He has an intimate feel for what coaches and, most importantly, kids are experiencing in their early years of competition.  Thankfully, most of this is good and helpful in their physical and emotional development.  But, too often, our children are turned off in this worthy pursuit by over zealous, misdirected, untrained adults. I am a convinced believer that, properly directed, athletic competition is foundational in the healthy, wholesome growth of our youngsters. And that this book will be a useful tool to make this happen!

Editor's note:  Jerry Kindall has been co-commissioner for the Minnesota Little League, a major leaguer with The Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and the Chicago Cubs, and a Head Coach at The University of Arizona ( 3 National Championships).
