No Gender Bias Here, Folks!

Although this book was written specifically for baseball, the majority of the content is applicable to many levels of girls’ fast pitch softball. The games are kin to one another and, until the higher competitive levels, are much more alike than they are different. At the higher competitive levels, softball becomes a considerably quicker game, resulting in the game assuming its own identity, separate from baseball. With exception to pitching, leading off and a few subtle differences in hitting and situational defenses, the book will prove to be an exceptional source of knowledge for softball coaches, parents and players, on all other aspects of the game. In addition, many of the same problems haunting boys’ competitive baseball also plague girls’ fast pitch softball.

I have also often wondered if the day will come when a very special girl will break the gender barrier, much like Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, and play major league baseball. For years I thought it to be inconceivable, with greater probability being placed on sneaking sunrise past a rooster. But after watching the University of Arizona Women’s Softball Team and the USA Women’s Olympic Fast Pitch Softball Team compete, I can only stand in complete awe and think to myself, WOW! Can these girls play! From this experience, my opinion has slightly swayed and I can only ascertain that the day for a woman to debut in “the big show” is now possible. With the formation of the American Women’s Baseball Federation and numerous other countries now establishing national women baseball teams (Puerto Rico, Canada, Taiwan, India, Japan, Korea, Venezuela and Pakistan - to name a few), only time knows the answer. Regardless, these ladies have given a new meaning to the lyrics of a song made popular by Marilyn Monroe that “‘diamonds’ are a girl’s best friend!”

I have therefore utilized both genders in the demonstration pictures and in the text of the book.
